More on Piraeus

Piraeus is on the Saronic Gulf. It serves as the main harbor for Greece. It also has the biggest passenger port in Europe and the third largest in the world, servicing some 20 million passengers per year.

The area around Piraeus has been settled as early as the 26th century BC. Through its long history, it has suffered from numerous invasions. Its prosperity has always been closely related to the fortunes surrounding its harbor. The creation of a modern Greek state, with Athens at the capital, greatly improved its fortunes. It rapidly grew from being a town past its prime to one of the largest in the country, partly due to its geographical location and proximity to the Greek capital.
