Pogradec is a city in southeastern Albania. Located at an elevation of 650 m (2,133 ft) on the shores of Lake Ohrid, it has a population of around 30,000 (2011 estimate). The district covers 725 sq km, of which the city limits occupy 15 sq km. Pogradec is within the Central European Time zone, which is an hour ahead of Coordinated Universal Time (UTC+1), and two hours ahead during Daylight Saving Time in summer.

Pogradec has a history going back thousands of years. In ancient times, the shores of Lake Ohrid was inhabited by Illyrian tribes. Over the centuries the area was colonized by Macedonians, Romans, Bulgarians, Serbians and Ottomans. During the Second World War, it was occupied by Italians and Germans.

Pogradec is famous in Albania for having produced a number of famous writers and poets, among them Lasgush Poradeci and Mitrush Kuteli.

Visiting Pogradec

You can enter Pogradec by taking a train from Tirana. It leaves at 5:55 am and arrives in Pogradec at 12:23 pm. The train station is a few miles from downtown Pogradec. You need to take a bus to reach it.

An alternative means is to take a bus or minibus from Tirana to Pogradec. The fare is 500 Leke for buses and 600 Leke for minibuses, and the journey takes about three or four hours.
