Punta Gorda is a town in southern Belize. Popularly known as PG locally, it is the biggest main town in southern Belize, in the Toledo district. Despite its Spanish name, most of the people here speak either Kriol or English, and are mostly Garifuna, East Indian and Kriol.

Punta Gorda was formed in around 1823, when it received an influx of Garifuna settlers who relocated from Honduras. It gradually evolved into a seaport and fishing village. Today the town is the main urban center for the Toledo District. It has an airport and a number of pleasant hotels.

Tourists visiting this part of Belize is still low, but with improve infrastructure, this is expected to increase. The town holds the Toledo Cacao Festival every May celebrating its assocation with cocao and chocolate.

Visiting Punta Gorda

The most practical way to reach Punta Gorda is to take a bus from Belize City. Expect the journey to take close six hours or more. There are also flights by small planes from Belize City to PG.
