More on Ravenna

Ravenna has been inhabited even before the arrival of the Romans. It began as a settlement in the marshy lagoon, a situation similar to that of Venice. It was added to the Roman Republic in 89 BC. It became the capital city of the Western Roman Empire from AD 402 to 476, and then the capital of the Kingdom of the Ostrogoths and the Exarchate of Ravenna until 751.

Ravenna was part of the Papal States until 1796, when it became part of the Cisalpine Republic. It joined the unified Kingdom of Italy in 1861.
