The official language of the Republic of the Congo is French. The country is an hour ahead of Coordinated Universal Time (UTC+1). Traffic is driven on the right here. The phone IDD code is +242. The electricity is 220V/50Hz. The official currency is the Central African CFA franc (XAF).

The Republic of the Congo had an estimated nominal GDP of $9.532 billion in 2009. This is equivalent to a per capita nominal GDP of $2,538. The per capita GDP at purchasing power parity is $4,145.

The land of present-day Republic of the Congo was inhabited by the Pygmy people, who were displaced later by Bantu tribes which also occupy parts of Angola, Gabon and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Portuguese were the first European power to arrive here.

By the 1880's, the Republic of the Congo became a colony of France. It was part of French Equitorial Africa, which includes Gabon, Chad and the Central African Republic (then known as Oubangui-Chari). Brazzaville was the federal capital of the colony. It attained independence on 15 August, 1960, and became known as the Congo Republic.

As is pravalent in Africa, the Congo Republic was rocked by political instability in its post-independent years. The first president of the republic was ousted within three years of holding office. Since then, the country has lived through coups and political infighting.

All visitors from Western Countries are expected to have a visa before arriving. Maya-Maya Airport (BZV) in Brazzaville is the gateway to the country. There are flights here from Paris, Johannesburg, Nairobi, Kinshasa, and Addis Ababa, among others.
