Rhône-Alpes is a region in southeastern France. It covers 43,698 sq km (16,871.9 sq mi) and has a population of 6.2 million people. The provincial capital is Lyon, which is the largest city in Rhône-Alpes and the second largest in France.

Rhône-Alpes is bordered by Switzerland to the northeast, Italy and Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur to the southeast, Languedoc-Roussillon to the southwest, Auvergne to the west, Burgundy to the northwest and Franche-Comté to the north.

Rhône-Alpes is located at the western end of the Alps mountains which covers parts of eastern Rhône-Alpes. On the border between France and Italy is Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in the Alps, in France, in Italy, in Western Europe and also in the European Union. It stands at 4,810 m (15,782 ft).

Two major rivers, the Rhône and the Saône, drains through the central part of Rhône-Alpes. These two rivers converge at Lyon. On the northern part of Rhône-Alpes is Lake Geneva, which separates parts of France from Switzerland.

Rhône-Alpes is today a highly developed region. It has the biggest economy in France after that of Île-de-France. The region is a center for various industries and services, as far ranging as nanotechnology to tourism, education and mechanical engineering. It enjoys the sixth largest GDP of any region in Europe.

Going to Rhône-Alpes

There are three main airports where you can use to reach Rhône-Alpes. They are the Bron International Airport (LYN) in Lyon, Cointrin International Airport (GVA) in Geneva, Switzerland, and Grenoble Isère International Airport (GNB) in Grenoble.

The city of Lyon is connected by rail to Paris and other major cities in France and Western Europe.
