Rosario is located on the Paraná River. It is a major industrial center as well as a transportation hub for northeastern Argentina. Goods exported from Rosario include agricultural products such as wheat, flour and hay as well as cooking oil, lumber and meats.Unlike most cities in Argentina, the founding of Rosario is not associated with any particular individual. The city began without a clear foundation date, even though it is now generally accepted that Rosario was established on 7 October, 1793.
Rosario was just a small town until 1880, when the Paraná River was open for free international trade. This helped to fuel the development of Rosario, whose population grew at a fast rate.
As with the rest of Argentina, Rosario suffered the effects of hyperinflation in the 1980s. At that time, its unemployment rate soared to 21.1%. There was frequent rioting and looting in the city. After the national economy collapsed in 2001, Rosario has gradually rebounded.
