Rovaniemi (map) is a city in Finland's northernmost province of Lapland. It covers 8,016 sq km (3,095 sq mi), making it the 5th biggest city in terms of area. With a population of 60,000, Rovaniemi is the 15th most populous city in Finland.

There is evidence of continuous human habitation in the area surrounding Rovaniemi since the Stone Age. The settlement first appeared in writing in 1453. At that time, it was a cluster of villages where the people lived simple lives as farmers, hunters and fishermen.

Rovaniemi grew into a town in the 19th century, when logging and gold mining in Lappland brought people north. Today the city acts as the provincial capital for Lapland. It is also a center of learning and research, with two universities in its midst.

The city has attracted a steady stream of visitors drawn to the natural landscape and particularly to the opportunity of viewing the Aurora Borealis. The city has also cashed in on its proximity to the Arctic Circle by having a number of recreational parks celebrating Santa Claus.

Visiting Rovaniemi

There are flights from Helsinki to Rovaniemi Airport (RVN), located 8 km to the north of downtown Rovaniemi. There are also some flights to Rovaniemi from Murmansk in Russia.

You can also take a train to Rovaniemi from Helsinki. The journey will take you a good 10-12 hours.

Santa Claus Village
Amusement park in Rovaniemi taking advantage of the Santa Claus belief. The park is located right inside the Arctic Circle, and visitors entering the park cross the line. Among the sights here include Santa Claus's Post Office, Santa Claus's Office and other attractions related to Santa Claus.
Santa Park
An underground amusement park with attractions that include Gingerbread Kitchen, Ice Gallery, Elf Workshop, Elf School, Sleigh Ride, Santa's Workshop, show, etc. The park was created to resemble Santa's cavern home.
