San Cristóbal is a city in mountainous part of western Venezuela, near the border with Colombia. It is the state capital of Táchira State. The city covers 247 sq km (95.4 sq mi) and has a population of 646,000 people, within an urban area of a million inhabitants.

San Cristóbal was founded in 1561 by Juan de Maldonado. It grows to become a major educational and commercial centers of the country. Blessed with rich soil, the city is a center for the surrounding agricultural region, which produces coffee, sugar and vegetables. In addition, there are factories in the city manufacturing leader products, textiles, cement and tobacco products. This makes San Cristóbal the third riches city in the country.

The wealth of San Cristóbal is reflected in its architecture, which ranges from the Spanish colonial style to modernist styles

Visiting San Cristóbal

Juan Vicente Gómez International Airport in San Antonio del Táchira (SVZ) is the main airport serving San Cristóbal. Located an hour away, it receives flights from Caracas. Another airport in the vicinity is the Mayor Buenventura Vivas Airport (STD) of Santo Domingo del Táchira, 45 minutes away.
