More on San Juan, Argentina

San Juan was founded in 1562. Originally known as San Juan de la Frontera, it was located at the shore of the San Juan River until 1593, when a massive flood forced a relocation some 2.5 km south. The city was somehow bypassed by the civil wars that tore through the country in the 19th century. However it was the birthplace of several prominent figures in Argentine history, among them the two main players instrumental in securing Argentina's independence from Spain: Francisco Narcico de Laprida and Dominican friar Justo Santa María de Oro.

San Juan was severely damaged by a powerful earthquake in 1944. It killed 10,000 people and left half the town's population homeless. Its old cathedral was among the victims of the quake. It has since been replaced with another, built in the modern-Tuscan-Romanesque style. Another quake in 1977 claimed a further 65 lives.
