San Miguel de Tucumán (map) is the capital of Tucumán Province in northern Argentina. It covers an area of 90 sq km (34.88 sq mi) and has a population of 528,000 (2011 estimate). It is the fifth largest city in Argentina behind Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Rosario and Mendoza.

San Miguel de Tucumán is the most important city in northern Argentina. Located 1,311 km (815 mi) from Buenos Aires in the Rió Salí Valley, the city often called simply as Tucumán has a prominent place in Argentine history: it hwas here that Argentina declared its independence in 1816.

San Miguel de Tucumán was founded by Spanish Conquistador Diego de Villarroel in 1565. The city was relocated in 1685 to its present site between the Aconquija mountains and the Chaco-Pampean flats. It is the hub of an agricultural region that produces sugarcane, rice, tobacco and fruit. The city has two major universities, giving it a high student population that provides it with a vibrant nightlife.

San Miguel de Tucumán is served by the Teniente Benjamín Matienzo International Airport. It receives receives flights from all the major cities of the country, with five daily flights from Buenos Aires. There are presently no international flights, so you have to reach the city by way of Buenos Aires.

  1. Casa Histórica de la Independencia
    The historical building where the declaration of independence was read out. The present structure is a replica: the original was destroyed by a fire in the late 19th century.

  2. Ninth of July Park
    The largest park in San Miguel de Tucumán, it covers 250 acres (100 ha).

  3. Tucumán Government Palace
    Historical building from 1910. It used to house not only the governor's office but also a courtroom and a small jail.
