Santa Rosa de Copán has a population of 43,000 people (2011 estimate). It is 1,150 meters (3,773 ft) above sea level, giving it a much cooler climate that cities in the lowland. Santa Rosa de Copán was founded in 1705 by Captain Don Juan García de la Candelaria, who bought the land from the Spanish Crown. The settlement was originall called Los Llanos and later Santa Rosa de Los Llanos. It was renamed once again in 1865, to Santa Rosa de Copán, a name that it hold till today.
