Santa Tecla is a city in La Libertad department, El Salvador. It covers 112.2 sq km (69.5 sq mi) and has a population of 164,000 people (2011 estimate). The city is situated at an elevation of 940 nm (3,083 ft), at the foot of the San Salvador Volcano, just 14.5 km from San Salvador, the national capital.

When Santa Tecla was founded in 1854, it was originally called Nueva San Salvador. It served as the national capital of El Salvador from 1855 to 1859, in the aftermath of a massive earthquake that devastated San Salvador. It reverted to being a departmental capital from 1865.

In 2003 the city went from Nueva San Salvador to Santa Tecla, after the name of the region before Nueva San Salvador was established. Santa Tecla is today a modern city with modern shopping malls and recreational areas. it has also preserved its historic heart, with its museums, theaters and civic buildings.
