More on Saverne

This history of Saverne goes back to Roman times. It was a fief of the prince-bishops of Strasbourg. Then in 1852, under Louis Napoleon, it became the residence of the widows of the knights of the Legion or Honour.

Saverne became part of the German Empire following the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871). In 1913, an incident between a German soldier and the people of Saverne escalated into what became known as the Saverne Affair. It caused a rift between the imperial state of Alsace-Lorraine and the rest of the German Empire. The town returned to French control after World War I.
