More on Settle

The history of Settle goes back to the Anglo-Saxon period. It was first settled by the Anglians in the 7th century. Following the Norman Conquest, it was one of the towns that suffered from William the Conqueror's "Harrying of the North", when many of the towns and villages of northern England were laid waste for resisting Norman rule. It reduced Settle to a skeleton of its former self. The town took a while to recover.

Settle was granted a market charter by King Henry III to Henry de Percy in 1248. This was when the market square at the heart of town was developed. The market is still being held weekly on Tuesdays, taking place inside Victoria Hall as well as outside in the market square itself.

In the late 18th and 19th centuries the economy of Settle was supported mainly by the cotton spinning industry. Today the town has evolved to make tourism one of the mainstays of its economy. It has a number of well-preserved historic houses worth visiting.
