Sidmouth is a seaside town facing the English Channel in the district of East Devon, in Devon, England. The town is a gateway to the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site. It has a populaton of around 15,000 people (2012 estimate).

Sidmouth is located at the mouth of the River Sid. It is surrounded by the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The rocks in the area contain fossils, giving the name Jurassic Coast to the stretch of coastline.

Sidmouth traces its history back a thousand years. It was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Sedemuda. It has existed as a fishing village. Attempts to built a harbor here failed as the site is unsheltered from the open sea. Sidmouth holds a Folk Week festival yearly in early August, attracting music enthusiasts from around the country as well as from overseas.

As with many of the coastal towns in Devon, Sidmouth today depend heavily on tourism for its survival. The town has an aging population, with some 40% of its people aged above 65. This is also partly due to it being a choice retirement village, with many pensioners coming here to live.

Visiting Sidmouth

Coming from the direction of Manchester, take the M5 motorway until Exit 30, then continue east on the A376 road followed by the A3052 road. At Bowd, turn right to the B3176 road, which takes you towards the coast and to Sidmouth.
