Sighişoara (German: Schäßburg, Hungarian: Segesvár) is a city on the Târnava Mare River in central Romania. Located in the region of Transylvania, it has a population of 33,000 people (2011 estimate). The historic center of Sighişoara has been well preserved and is today a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city is a popular tourist destination in Romania.

As with elsewhere in Transylvania, Hungary and Slovakia, Sighişoara saw an influx of German settlers in the 12th century. They came to populate the area at the invitation of the King of Hungary who ruled over Transylvania at that time. Called the Transylvanian Saxons, they shaped the culture and character of the city.Sighişoara was an important city in Transylvania in the 16th and 17th centuries, owing to its location. The presence of German artisans contributed to its economy. Today it is regarded as one of the most beautiful and well preserved inhabited fortified towns in Europe.
