Sigulda is a town in the Gauja river valley in central Latvia. It is located in the Vidzeme region, 53 km to the northeast of Riga. The town covers 18.2 sq km (7 sq mi) and has a population of 17,000 people (2011 estimate).

Visiting Sigulda

You can go to Sigulda by train as well as by bus. Both the train and the bus journeys take about 75 minutes.

Places of Interest in Sigulda

  1. Aerodium Latvia
    The first vertical wind tunnel in Eastern Europe.

  2. Gauja National Park
    This is the biggest national park in Latvia. It follows the Gauja River Valley. There are plenty of picturesque sights within the park.

  3. Gutmanis Cave
    The deepest cave among the Baltic countries.

  4. Krimulda Castle
    Ruins of a 14th century castle that was destroyed in the war in 1601.

  5. Sigulda Medieval Castle
    The ruins of a castle built in 1207 by Master Venno of the Order of the Brethren of the Sword.

  6. Sigulda New Castle
    Called the New Castle to distinguish it from the Medieval Castle, this was built in the late 19th century. Today it houses the Sigulda Regional Council.

  7. Turaida Castle
    Brick Gothic-style castle originally built in 1214 and damaged in a fire in 1776. It has recently been reconstructed. The castle is located on the opposite bank of the Gauja River from Sigulda.
