Sintra is a small city with a rich history located within Lisbon District, the Greater Lisbon Area of Portugal. The city is today a major local tourist destination for visitors to Lisbon. Its historic core is a UNESCO World Heritage Site rich in 19th century architecture.

The earliest mention of Sintra goes back to the 11th century in the annals of Arab geographer Al-Bacr. The city is much older than that, as the Moors had built a fortess here in the 8th or 9th century. In 1493, Christopher Columbus was blown off course by a strong gale and was forced to seek refuge in Sintra.

Sintra was perhaps best known for the signing of the controversial Convention of Sintra in 1808, which ended the French invasion of Portugal.

You can reach Sintra by taking the train from Lisbon. A return trip costs €3.40.
