More on Sønderborg

Sønderborg was named after the local castle, Sønderborg Slot, which was built in 1170 by Valdemar I. The town of Sønderborg saw heavy fighting between Denmarki and Prussia during the Second Schleswig War of 1864. Denmark lost the war, which saw Sønderborg and much of southern Jutland being annexed into Prussia, and remained part of Germany until 1920.
