More on Southwold

Despite its present small size, Southwold has a history spanning over a thousand years. It was listed in the Domesday Book of 1086. It received its town charter in 1489 from King Henry VII. It was an important fishing port, but the build up of silt and a shingle bar prevented it from becoming a major harbor.

In the 17th century, a number of Puritan families in Southwold were among the emigrants who voted with their feet to leave England, at first for the Netherlands, and eventually for the Massachusetts Bay Colony in America.
