Staying in Monasteries in Greece
It is possible to get accommodation at some of the monasteries and convents in Greece. This is especially true for those located off the beaten path where there are no other forms of accommodation available. The hostels within the monasteries and convents are called xenónes. They are really intended for the use of pilgrims who therefore will have priority over the lodging over common travelers.

As would be expected, xenónes are spartan in their furnishing. The meals provided here are equally frugal in nature. Rather than paying fee for the room, you just need to leave a donation in the main church, or katholikón.
The monasteries most accustomed to receiving non-pilgrim travelers are those on Mount Athos. However, their rooms are available only to men. As you will have to go though a lengthy process to gain entry to these semi-autonomous monastic region, plan well in advance.
