Stein am Rhein is a beautiful little town on the banks of the River Rhine in Schaffhausen canton, Switzerland. Situated 413 m (1,355 ft) above sea level, the town covers 6.06 sq km (2.34 sq mi) and has a population of 3,200 people (2011 estimate). Its name means "stone on the Rhine".

Stein am Rhein has a beautifull preserved medieval core. Although inhabited since Roman times, the present town was established by Emperor Henry II in AD 1007 when he relocated the Benedictine Abbey of St George there. A village developed there and became a prosperous little town by the 15th century.

Although it suffered from Allied bombings during World War II, Stein am Rhein has been well restored. Today its Old Town has numerous half-timbered houses with their façades painted with frescoes.

Most of the people in Stein am Rhein speak German as their mother tongue (89.2%), with Serbo-Croatian being the second most common mother tongue (2.5%). Over 20% of the people in Stein am Rhein are foreigners. Due to its proximity to Germany, 38.6% of the foreigners in Stein am Rhein are German nationals, followed by nationals of Italy, Croatia, Serbia, Macedonia and Turkey.

You can take the train to Stein am Rhein from Schaffhausen or Kreuzlingen. The town itself is small enough for you to explore on foot.

Sights & Attractions in Stein am Rhein

  1. Kloster St Georgen
    The Benedictine monastery around which the town developed. It houses a museum devoted to recounting local history.

  2. Obertor and Untertor
    The two medieval town gates that still stand.

  3. Rathaus
    The town hall built in the 16th century, today exhibiting paintings and art objects that depict the town's history.

  4. Rathausplatz
    Public square in front of the town hall, a good place to admire some of the nicest buildings in Stein am Rhein.
