More on Stonehouse

The history of Stonehouse goes back to the 11th century, as it was listed in the Domesday Book in 1086 as Stanhus. It got its name from a manor house of stone built in the area - unlike most buildings during that time which were of wattle and daub. The manor house only burnt down in 1908, and in its place today stands the Stonehouse Court Hotel, itself a Grade II listed manor house.

Stonehouse experienced much growth in the 18th century, when the Stroudwater Navigation canal was cut passing through it. It is now a thing of the past, though parts of the canal can still be seen, and restoration efforts are under way, to turn it into a recreational area.

Today Stonehouse is home to a number of multinational companies. Its geographical location plays a big part in attracting businesses to the area, particularly since it is close to the M5 and M4 motorways.
