Sukhumi (Georgian: სოხუმი, Abkhaz: Аҟәа, Russian: Сухум) is the capital of Abkhazia, a disputed region on the northeastern part of Georgia. Abkhazia is regarded by Georgia and most of the countries of the world as an autonomous republic within Georgia while Russia and a small number of countries recognizes it as an independent state.

Sukhumi witness fighting in the Georgian-Abkhaz conflict following the collapse of the Soviet Union, which led to Georgian independence. The city dates back to the mid-6th century BC. In 1451 it was briefly captured by Ottoman forces. It only fell to Ottoman rule in the 1570s. Following the Russian Revolution of 1917, Sukhumi became part of the Democratic Republic of Georgia.Sukhumi experiences a humid subtropical climate. The warmest month here is August, when the average high temperature touches 26°C (79°F). Coldest months are January and February, when the average low drops to 2°C (36°F). Rain is fairly evenly spread out through the year, although December tends to be the wettest month, receiving 152 mm (5.98 in) of rain.
