Tampere (map), a city in southern Finland, is noted as the most populous inland city of any Nordic countries. It is also the most populous city outside the Greater Helsinki area (which has the cities of Helsinki and Espoo). Tampere has a population of 213,000 within the Pirkanmaa region, which has 470,000 inhabitants. Tampere covers 689.59 sq km (266.3 sq mi).

Tampere began as a settlement established by King Gustav III of Sweden in 1775. It received full city rights four years later, even though at that time it was just a small town of a few square kilometers. It did however grew into Finland's main industrial center by the 19th century. It remains a well-developed region whose economy is supported by mechanical engineering, automation, information technology, communication technology and bio technology.

Tampere experiences a subarctic climate. July is the warmest month, when the average high temperature rises to 21.5°C (70.7°F). February is the coldest month, when the average low temperature drops to -11°C (12.2°F). August is the wettest month, receiving 75.4 mm (2.969 in) of rain.

Visiting Tampere

The Tampere-Pirkkala Airport (TMP) is the third busiest airport in Finland. It receives flights from major cities in Europe. However, if you are going to Tampere from Helsinki, it may be more practical to take the train, which gets you where within one and a half hours. Going by road takes about 2 hours.

  1. Amuri Museum of Workers Housing (Amurin työläismuseokortteli)
    Museum occupying former living quarters of workers in the 19th century. It provides a glimpse into how workers used to live during that period.

  2. Finnish Labor Museum Werstas (Työväenmuseo Werstas)
    Museum focusing on labor in Finland.

  3. Lenin Museum (Lenin-museo)
    A rather off-beat museum celebrating all things related to Lenin in Tampere. The Soviet leader spent some time in exile in Tampere, and this provided fodder for the displays. Among the items exhibited include the sofa where he slept on. And as would be expected, there's a forest of Lenin busts from all over.

  4. Mineral Museum (Tampereen kivimuseo)
    Museum providing information on minerals and gems. It also exhibits meteorites and even dinosaur eggs.

  5. Moomin Museum
    Also called Moominvalley, this is a museum that celebrates the cartoon characters of Finnish author Tove Jansson.

  6. Spy Museum (Vakoilumuseo)
    Said to be the first spy museum in the world, this specialty museum focuses on the subject of espionage. It exhibits items such as spy cameras and secret weapons, all very James Bond-ish.
