Tasmania is the biggest island as well as state in Australia. It is located off southeastern part of the part of mainland Australia, separated 240 km away by the Bass Strait. Covering an area of 65,022 sq km (25,105 sq mi), Tasmania is the 26th biggest island in the world. The whole area of Tasmania is 90,758 sq km including 24.6% of water. The highest point on Tasmania is Mount Ossa, at 1,614 m (5,295 ft).

Tasmania has a population of 502,600 people. It has the 6th most populous state behind all states in Australia except the Northern Territory. Its capital and biggest town is Hobart. The state observes the Australian Eastern Standard Time, which is +10 GMT. It also observes Daylight Saving Time from the first Sunday of October to the first Sunday of April, at +11 GMT. The postal abbreviation for Tasmania is TAS.

Going to Tasmania

Hobart International Airport (HBA) is the main gateway to Tasmania. It receives regular scheduled flights by Qantas, Jetstar, Virgin Blue and Tiger Airways. Although it is an international airport, it hasn't received a scheduled international flight since Air New Zealand suspended operations in 1998.

Apart from Hobart, you can also fly to Launceston, Burnie and Devonport in Tasmania. In addition, you can take the Spirit of Tasmania ferries between Station Pier in Port Melbourne to Devonport in Tasmania.

Getting around in Tasmania

The most convenient and practical form of transport would be to rent a car. If you are coming from the Australian mainland, you can bring your car on board the Spirit of Tasmania ferry.
