More about Tétrouan

Tétrouan is located about 60 km to the east of the city of Tangier. It is a cosmopolitan city where many languages are spoken. Although Arabic is the official language in Morocco, in Tétrouan a dialect is predominantly spoken. Many people here also understand Spanish and French, which are often used in commerce.

Tétrouan was founded in the 3rd century BC. The discovery of Roman and Phoenician artifacts provide proof that both have been in the area. The modern city of Tétrouan traces its history to the 14th century, when it was built by King Abu Thabit of the Marinid.

Tétrouan was destroyed by the Castilians in the 15th century. Then at the end of the 15th century, it received an influx of refugees from Spain following the reconquest of Spain and the fall of Granada in 1492. The Andalusian Moors from Spain brought with them their architectural style that greatly enriched the medieval architecture of Tétrouan.

Tétrouan also received the Sephardi Jewish community which was also ousted from Spain during the Reconquista and the Spanish Inquisition. The Separdi Jews speak their own language called Haketia. In the last century, many of these have moved on, to Israel, back to Spain, as well as to South America, France and Canada, leaving only a small number in Tétrouan.

Tétrouan is today one of the major tourist destinations in Morocco on account of its medina, or old town, which is well preserved and exhibits the influences of Andalusian Moors. The city is also a center of handicrafts with a concentration of weavers, jewelers and leather workers.

Visiting Tétrouan

You can reach Tétrouan by bus from Ceuta or Tangier.
