Tewkesbury was founded in the 7th century. It was named after Theocalious, a hermit who lived in the area. It had already developed into a settlement before Norman Conquest of 1066, particularly in the area surrounding Tewkesbury Abbey.Construction of Tewkesbury Abbey began in 1090 and was completed in 1121. Formerly a Benedictine monastery, it was saved from the Dissolution of the Monasteries when the townspeople bought it up for use as their parish church. It stands today as the second largest parish church in the country. Tewkesbury was largely a market town for farmers in the surrounding area to sell their produce. It experienced growth and industrial development in the 19th century, when it became a major four milling center. Some of the old mills in Tewkesbury are now preserved and readapted.
