Thames Ditton is a village in Surrey, England. It is located in Elmbridge district, near the border between Surrey and Greater London, about 20 km (12 mi) from Charing Cross, London. The history of Thames Ditton goes back to its first recorded mention in AD983 by King Æthelred. The Domesday Book of 1086 recorded two towns, Ditone and Ditune. These two Dittons were later unived when Anne Gould inheritaed the manor of Thames Ditton and married Thomas Eveleyn, who inherited the manor of (Long) Ditton.
By the start of the 19th century, the population of Thames Ditton stood at 1,288 people. Most of the villagers were involved in farming, with a smaller group in the trades, manufacture and handicraft. The London and South Western Railway arrived in Thames Ditton in 1849, improving access to the village.
Today Thames Ditton is a modern, charming village with a large commuter population. That it evolved into a dormitory village cannot be avoided, being so close to Greater London. Apart from those working in London, Thames Ditton also support a large student population from Esher College.
