Timişoara is a city in Banat region in western Romania. It covers 129.2 sq km (49.9 sq mi) and has a population of 530,000 people (2011 estimate). The city is situated 95 m (295 ft) above sea level, on the southeastern edge of the Banat Plain, within a fertile agricultural area.

Timişoara experiences a continental climate. July and August are the hottest month, both registering an average high temperature of 28°C (82°F). Coldest month is January, with average low temperature of -5°C (23°F). June receives the most rain, at 91 mm (3.58 in).Timişoara dates back to its first mention in either 1212 or 1266. As with most of the cities in the region, it became part of the Kingdom of Hungary in the 11th century. The city was conquered by the Ottomans, who left their influence on the character of the city.

Timişoara was ruled by the Ottomans from 1552 until 1716, when Prince Eugene of Savoy conquered it and ushered in Austrian rule, under the Habsburg Empire. This lasted until the dissolution of the empire following World War I, when Timişoara became part of Romania.
Timişoara experienced rapid industrialization in the mid 19th century. It was the first mainland European city to introduce electric street lamps, in 1884, and the first in Romania to introduce horse-drawn trams, in 1867. It suffered from both Allied and Axis bombings during the Second World War. After the war, Timişoara was behind the Iron Curtain until the Romanian Revolution of 1989.

You can fly to Timişoara arriving at the Traian Vuia International Airport (TSR), the third busiest airport in Romania. It receives flights from Athens, Bari, Bologna, Bucharest, Chernivtsi, Constanţa, Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Florence, Iaşi, London Luton, Lviv, Madrid, Munich, Odessa, Rome, Sibiu, Stuttgart, Turin, Venice, and Verona, among others.
You can also reach Timişoara by train from Bucharest. The journey takes about five hours. There are also train services from Budapest (4 hours), Vienna (8 hours) and Munich (15 hours).
