More on Trenčín

Trenčín straddles the Vah River. It has a well-preserved historic center. Overlooking the old town is Trenčín Castle, which stands on a rocky mount. The city has a history going back to the Roman era. The city itself developed around the castle, which is believed to have been established during the Great Moravian era, some time in the 9th century.

Trenčín was able to withstand Mongol invasion in 1241, largely due to its stone castle. The castle became a pawn under various rulers, as it was given or taken away by the ruler based on allegiance of the local noblemen.
