More on Tring

The old Roman Road of Akeman Street passes right through Tring and forms part of its High Street. This gives an indication that the site may have been inhabited since Roman times. It was listed in the Domesday Book of 1086 as the Manor of Treunga.

In 1682, the famous architect Sir Christopher Wren built a mansion on Tring Park that was later occupied by Lawrence Washington, the great-grandfather of George Washington, the first President of the United States. In the late 19th century, the estate became the property of the Rothschild family, one of whom Lionel Walter Rothschild, founded a private zoological museum in Tring. It became one of the largest collections of stuffed animals worldwide, and is known today as the Natural History Museum at Tring.

Today Tring is a small town that has evolved into a dormitory town for people working in London.
