Tromsø (map) is a small city in Troms county, on the northern part of Norway. The seventh largest city in Norway, Tromsø covers 2,524 sq km (974.5 sq mi) and has a population of 68,000 (2011 estimate).

Much of Tromsø is on the island of Tromsøya connected to the mainland by the Tromsø Bridge and Tromsøysund Tunnel. The town is surrounded by snowcapped mountains.

Tromsø is 350 km (217 mi) inside the Arctic Circle. However, the Gulf Stream helps to moderate the climate, making it warmer than comparable places of similar latitude. Tromsø experiences a subarctic climate. Warmest monthy is July, with average high temperature of 15.3°C (59.5°F). Coldest months are January and February, when the average low drops to -6.5°C (20.3°F). October is the wettest month, receiving 131 mm (5.16 in) of precipitation.

Visiting Tromsø

Tromsø Airport (TOS) receives flights from Oslo as well as from London Gatwick, Svalbard, Murmansk and Arkhangelsk. Arriving here, you can take the public bus 40 and 42 to downtown Tromsø. The journey takes only 15 minutes and the fare is NOK 26.

  1. Ishavskatedralen (Arctic Cathedral)
    Also called the Tromsdalen Church, this cathedral was built to resemble how the Northern Lights brighten up Tromsø during the winter months.

  2. Nordlysplanetariet (Northern Lights Planetarium)
    Planetarium that offers visitors a unique experience, through a realistic film screening, off the Northern Lights and Midnight Sun.

  3. Nordnorsk Kunstmuseum (Northern Norwegian Art Museum)
    Museum specializing in paintings, sculptures and crafts from northern Norway.

  4. Polaria
    The national research center on the Arctic and polar regions, it is open to the public with a documentary film about the polar landscape, and an aquarium featuring Arctic fish and seals

  5. Polarmuseet
    Museum offering a glimpse into the workings in the Polar region, from hunting to research expeditions.

  6. Tromsø Kunstforening
    This is the oldest art society in Norway. Established in 1877, it is open to the public with exhibits of Norwegian and international contemporary art.

  7. Tromsø Museum, Universitetsmuseet
    Established in 1872, the Tromsø Museum is a regional museum featuring Northern Norway. It has a wide collection of artifacts from the different ages.
