In around 1470, the St George's Collegiate Church was built, and through it's office, came the founding of the Eberhard Karls University in 1477. This is today one of the oldest universities in Central Europe and an influential place of learning in the Holy Roman Empire. It is still today the main source of income for the city, being one of the biggest universities in Germany.

The leading German newspaper Allgemeine Zeitung was founded in Tübingen in 1798. As in the rest of Germany, the Jews in Tübingen suffered under the Nazis, having their synagogue razed on 9 November, 1938. However the city was spared large scale bombing, a good fortune shared with other German university towns such as Heidelberg and Göttingen. Following the Second World War, Tübingen was made the capital of the state of Württemberg-Hohenzollern which existed from 1946 until 1952, when it was merged with Baden and Württemberg-Baden to form Baden-Württemberg.
