Turin is a city in northern Italy. It is the capital as well as the business and cultural center of the Piedmont region. The city has a population of 910,000 while the urban area 1.7 million people, in a metropolitan area with a population of 2.2 million people (2011 estimate).

The city of Turin is rich in culture and history. It has numerous galleries, churches, palaces and public squares. Turin if perhaps mos famous as the home of the Shroud of Turin. It is also the homebase of the Juventus F.C. and Torino F.C., as well as the headquarters of automobile companies such as Fiat, Lancia and Alfa Romeo. It was the host of the 2006 Winter Olympics.

Turin traces its history to a military camp known as Castra Taurinorum which was established in the area in 28 BC. In the 16th century, it became the capital of the Duchy of Savoy. In 1861 it became the first capital of a unified Italy.

The city of Turin experience many decades of population decline in the 20th century. Only in the 21st century that the decline was reverse, with the population growing from 865,000 in 2011 to 910,000 in 2009.

Going to Turin

The Turin-Caselle Airport (TRN), also called the Sandro Pertini Airport, after a former Italian president, is located in the town of Caselle, 15 km to the north of the Tuin city center. There are bus services from the airport to the Torino Porta Nuova Railway Station running every 30-40 minutes and costing €5 per way.
