Uttoxeter traces its history back to the Anglo-Saxon period. Its name has been spelling in as many as 79 different ways. The oldest form is probably Wuttuceshæddre, meaning "Wuttuc's homestead on the heath". Human settlement in the area goes back even before the Anglo-Saxon period, probably into the Bronze Age.
