Varaždin (map) is a city near the river Drava in northern Croatia. It is located in Varaždin country. Covering 59.45 sq km (23 sq mi), Varaždin has a population of 47,000 (2011 estimate).

Warmest month in Varaždin is July, when the average temperature is at 20.3°C (68.5°F). It also receives the most rain, at 95.6 mm (3.764 in). Coldest month is January, when the average temperature drops to -0.7°C (30.7°F).

The history of Varaždin goes back to 1181, when it was mentioned in relation to its thermal spring, in a document issued by King Béla III. Over the centuries it grew to become an economic and military hub for northern Croatia. The city had a medieval fortification built to ward off attacks by Turkish invaders.

Varaždin served as the capital of Croatia from 1756 until 1776, when the administrative institutions of Croatia was moved to Zagreb, due to a massive fire that destroyed most of Varaždin.

Varaždin is developing into a domestic tourist destination, particularly during the summer holidays. It is renowned for its baroque buildings. The city has numerous museums, art galleries and other historic buildings. Its economy is based on the manufacture of textile, food processing and the IT industry.

Visiting Varaždin

You can reach Varaždin by bus or train from Zagreb. The train probably offers the most scenic option. It takes 140 minutes to go from Zagreb. A return ticket costs 80 kn.

  1. Castle and Civic Museum (Stari Grad & Gradski Muzej)
    Castle built over the ruins of an observation tower with additions in the 15th century. The museum showcases medieval weapons, china, furniture and handicrafts. There is also an 18th century pharmacy.

  2. Cathedral of the Assumption (Uznesenja Marijina)
    Church and annexed monastery built by the Jesuits in the early 17th century, elevated to cathedral since 1997.

  3. Church of St John the Baptist (Sv. Ivan Krstitelj)
    Church from 1650 built in the Baroque style on the site of an earlier church of the 13th century, with statues of St Francis of Assisi and St Anthony of Padua.

  4. Church of the Holy Trinity (Sv. Trojstvo)
    18th century church housing an outstanding collection of Baroque paintings as an organ with angelic figures playing instruments.

  5. Gallery of Old and Modern Masters (Galerija Starih i Novih Majstora)
    Gallery celebrating the works of art from all over Europe, with special emphasis on Flemish, Dutch, German and Italian painters

  6. Herzer Palace (Palača Herzer)
    18th century palace, today housing the Entomological Section of the Civic Museum, with its collection of thousands of insects, as well as a herbarium.

  7. National Theater (Narodno Kazalište)
    The main cultural center of Varaždin, built in 1873, will staging performances particularly during summer and autumn.

  8. Tomislav Square (Trg Kralja Tomislava)
    The main square of Varaždin with historical buildings such as the Town Hall and the Drašković Palace lining it.
