Over the centuries it grew to become an economic and military hub for northern Croatia. The city had a medieval fortification built to ward off attacks by Turkish invaders.

Varaždin served as the capital of Croatia from 1756 until 1776, when the administrative institutions of Croatia was moved to Zagreb, due to a massive fire that destroyed most of Varaždin.
Varaždin is developing into a domestic tourist destination, particularly during the summer holidays. It is renowned for its baroque buildings. The city has numerous museums, art galleries and other historic buildings. Its economy is based on the manufacture of textile, food processing and the IT industry.
