Viña del Mar, which means Vineyard of the Sea, is a popular beach destination on the Pacific coast of Chile. Located in the Valparaíso Region, it covers 121.6 sq km (47 sq mi) and has a population of 287,000 (2011 estimate). The city is one of the five municipalities within the Valparaíso Metropolitan Area, the third largest in the country after that of Santiago and Concepción.

Viña del Mar is Chile's beach playground, a weekend destination for city folks. It has a number of sandy beaches facing the Pacific Ocean. To keep the crowd coming, it is also home to the Viña del Mar Municipal Casino. Founded in 1930, it is the oldest gambling house in South America. The city hosts the Viña del Mar International Song Festival every February, during the heat of the Chilean summer.

YOu can reach Viña del Mar by bus from Santiago de Chile and Valparaíso. The journey from Santiago takes about 90 minutes.

  1. Casino Municipal de Viña del Mar
    This Neo-Classical building, built in 1932, houses the oldest casino in South America.

  2. Castillo Wulff
    Castle home of German-born industrialist Gustavo Adolfo Wulff, complete with turrets, ramparts and bastion, today a national monument and landmark.

  3. Museo de Arqueológia e Historia Francisco Fonck
    Museum showcasing a fabulous collection of pre-Hispanic artifacts from Chile and other Latin American countries. At its entrance is one of the few actual Easter Island moai on mainland Chile.

  4. Palacio Carrasco
    mansion in the Beaux-Arts style, today a national monument housing the cultural center.

  5. Palacio Rioja
    Mansion in the Neo-Classical style, built by tobacco baron Fernando Rioja in 1907, today a national monument housing the Museum of Decorative Arts.

  6. Palacio Vergara
    A Venetian Neo-Gothic palace originally built for José Francisco Vergara's family, today houses the Municipal Museum of Fine Art.

  7. Plaza José Francisco Vergara
    The central square of Viña del Mar, named after the city founder, surrounded by major landmarks such as the Hotel Viña del Mar, Hotel O'Higgins and the Teatro Municipal.

  8. Reloj de Flores
    This is a flower clock that solidifies Viña del Mar's reputation as the City of Gardens.
