Volos is a coastal port city in Greece. It is located in the periphery of Thessaly, and serves as the capital of Magnesia Prefecture. The city is on the Greek mainland, 326 km north of Athens and 215 km south of Thessaloniki.

Volos is at the innermost point of the Pagasetic Gulf. It is at the foot of Mount Pilos. The city serves as the main outlet for the agricultural products of the Thessaly region.

With a population of around 200,000 (2011 estimate), Volos is the third biggest commercial port in Greece. Its economy is also supported by manufacturing, trade, services and tourism.

The area surrounding Volos has been inhabited since antiquity, with ruins of ancient cities such as Demetrias, Pagasae and Iolcos evident. The city was ruled by the Ottomans from the 15th century until 1832, when the Treaty of Constantinople established a Greek independent state.

Going to Volos

By Plane
Volos Airport (VOL) is located 30 km to the southwest of the city center. Ryanair flies there between April and October from Hahn (Frankfurt), Milan, Rome and Cherleroi (Brussels). From the airport, there is a bus service to the Volos Bus Station for €3.00.

By Bus
There are inter-city coach buses to Volos from Athens (fare: €20) and Thessaloniki (fare: €12).

By Train
The Volos Railway Station is often described as the most beautiful in Greece. There are trains there from major cities in the country.
