Wengen is a small car-free village in the Bernese Oberland, in Bern canton, Switzerland. The village covers 36.4 sq km (14.1 sq mi) and has a population of 1,300 people (2011 estimate).

Wengen is located midway between Lauterbrunnen and Jungfraujoch, and comprises a cluster of chalets and hotels perched on the mountain slope, with pastures spreading out around it. It is a place where time moves slowly, and without vehicle traffic, visitors are expected to slowdown and take it easy.

Due to its pristine surroundings, Wengen has become an increasingly popular tourist destination. In summer there are hiking trails to cover while in winter, visitors can go skiing and snowboarding. The views in Wengen is spectacular, with Grindelwald on one side and the Lauterbrunnen spread out on the other.

Visiting Wengen

Cars are not permitted into Wengen. You can get there by taking a train from Interlaken. The Interlaken-Ost railway station to Lauterbrunnen, and from there change to the Wengernalpbahn, a dedicated gauge rack rail line to Wengen. The Wengernalpbahn is the longest continuous rack-and-pinion railway in the world.
