More on West Bromwich

The name West Bromwich is interesting in that there is no Bromwich or East Bromwich (unless you count its fictional depiction in the Hellboy comics series). It was originally a settlement known as Broomwich Heath, which was established in the 12th century. The name Bromwich was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086, suggesting that it has been around even earlier.

The name West Bromwich came about when coal was discovered to the west of the village of Bromwich Heath in the 19th century, resulting in a "new" town being created that adopted the name West Bromwich. Over time, Bromwich Heath slipped into oblivian while West Bromwich developed into a county borough.

West Bromwich experienced rapid development during the Industrial Revolution of the 19th century. In the post-World War II years, it received an influx of immigrants from the Indian subcontinent and the Caribbean, greatly altering its demographics. The town was badly hit by recessions in the 1970s and 80s, with factory closures causing massive unemployment. It was affected by mass rioting that spread through many towns and cities of England in August 2011. Social problems continue to be an issue to the town.
