West Midlands county, not to be confused with the West Midlands Region, is a metropolitan county and ceremonial county within West Midlands Region. This landlocked county covers 902 sq km (348 sq mi) and has a population of 2.6 million people.

West Midlands County was created in 1974 from parts of Staffordshire, Worchestershire and Warwickshire. This largely urban county is the location of the City of Birmingham, the City of Coventy and the City of Wolverhampton. Also included within the West Midlands county are the towns of Dudley, Sandwell, Solihull and Walsall.

In 1986, the West Midlands County Council was abolished, so that now the individual metropolitan boroughs are unitary authorities. The county however continue to exist geographically.

Within West Midlands County are cities whose history goes back to the Middle Ages and before. The city of Coventry has been a wool and cloth manufacturing centre since the Middle Ages, while Birmingham and Wolverhampton have a variety of small industries dating from the 16th century.

Visiting West Midlands County

The biggest city in West Midlands County is Birmingham, which is also the second biggest city in the United Kingdom. You can fly to Birmingham from London as well as from major cities in Europe, landing at the Birmingham International Airport, located in Solihull, about 8 miles to the east of downtown Birmingham.

From the airport, you can take a train to the Birmingham Railway Station, which is a major hub of Britain's rail network, and from there continue to other cities in the West Midlands County.
