Weston-super-Mare is a seaside resort town in Somerset, England. Facing the Bristol Channel, it has a population of about 72,000 people (2012 estimate). The town is located about 29 km (18 mi) to the southwest of Bristol.

Human habitation in the area of present-day Weston-super-Mare goes back to the Iron Age, though the town remains as just a small village right up to the 19th century. That was when it began to develop as a seaside resort. Its developed can be attributed to the construction of the railway line that enables visitors easy access to the towns and cities of the are.

The Bristol Channel has a very large tidal range. At low tide, the water edge is one mile from the seafront, exposing a large expanse of mudflats. The buildings in Weston-super-Mare are built of local stone. Many of these date from the early part of the 20th century and are of the Art Deco style.

Weston-super-Mare saw a decline in visitor numbers since the 1970s. It was not alone. As lifestyle evolved and going to the beach became out of fashion, most British seaside resorts were affected, particularly as foreign destinations became cheap by comparison. Nonetheless Weston-super-Mare is still a popular destination.

If coming by car, take the M4 motorway from London. at Junction 20, continue in the South West direction on the M5 motorway. Leave the M5 at Junction 21 and continue on the A370 to reach Weston-super-Mare.

  1. Birnbeck Pier
    Derelict pier that has not yet been fully restored (at time of writing, Jan 2012).

  2. Grand Pier
    Pier built in 1904. It has been destroyed twice by fire, the first time in 1930 and the second in 2008. It has since been rebuilt and reopened in 2010.

  3. Helicopter Museum
    Museum displaying about 80 helicopters from around the world.

  4. Silica
    Public art installed in 2006.

  5. Weston-super-Mare Museum
    Museum recounting the history of the town from prehistoric times until present day.
