More on Weybridge

Although human habitation in the Weybridge area goes back to the Roman period and perhaps earlier, the town began as a settlement established by the Saxons. Following Norman Conquest, it was listed in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Webruge. The manor was dividedly held by Chertsey Abbey, an Englishman from the abbey, and the Bishop of Bayeux.

In 1537, Oatlands Palace was built here by King Henry VIII. It stood until 1650, when it was demolished, and its bricks used to build the Wey Navigation canal. The canal helped to improve transportation between London and Surrey, and led to development in the area.

Today Weybridge has one of the highest property prices in South East England. Six of the ten most expensive streets in the region are located here. The quality of life and proximity to Greater London make Weybridge a choice address of the well-to-do.
