More on Weymouth

Weymouth developed into a town in the mid 12th century, and over time established itself as a seaport. It comprises a collection of villages with Melcome Regis being the town center. In 1530 King Henry VIII built two castles in the area for coastal defences, Sandsfoot Castle and Portland Castle.

In 1635 a group of immigrants from Weymouth crossed the Atlantic to resettle in Massachusetts. They also named the new settlement Weymouth. Famous English Christopher Wren was a Member of Parliament for Weymouth in 1702. It used stones from Portland's quarries when he built St Paul's Cathedral.
