Willemstad is the capital and main city on Curaçao, a Caribbean island within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Located on the central southern part of the island, Willemstad has a population of around 140,000 people. It was also the capital of the Netherlands Antilles until its dissolution in 2010.

Willemstad comprises Punda and Otrobanda. Punda was established in 1634; its name derived from de punt. Otrobanda, whose name means "the other side", was founded in 1707 and is regarded as the cultural precinct of Willemstad.

Today Willemstad has grown to become a major seaport and one ofthe biggest centers for oil refinery in the Caribbean. The city is also a tourist destination with many well-preserved Dutch-style historic buildings. Those facing the harbor are particularly charming. They were included on UNESCO's World Heritage List in 1997. Willemstad also attract gamblers to its casinos.

  3. Mikve Israel-Emanuel Synagogue
    This is one of the oldest synagogue in the New World to be in continuous use. It is now some 350 years old.

  4. Philatelic Museum
    Housed in a colonial building, this museum exhibits a wide collection of Netherlands Antilles stamps.

  5. Queen Emma Bridge
    Bridge built in 1888, today a major landmark.
