Winnipeg is the provincial capital and largest city in Manitoba, Canada. It is located at the confluence of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers. The city and its metropolitan area has a population of around 700,000, which represents some sixty percent of the population of Manitoba.

The area around Winnipeg was a settlement of First Nation tribespeople who left behind petroglyphs, rock art and oral history. Some form of agriculture was evident before the arrival of Europeans. In 1738 a French officer arrived in the area. The Frenchmen settling in the area intermarried with the local women, creating the Métis, a group of indigenous people with mixed European and First Nations parentage.

Winnipeg is located at the bottom of the Red River Valley. it is the coldest city in the world with a population above 600,000. Its temperature tends to be extreme, with bitter cold winters and hot summers. Warmest months are July and August, when average high of the day reaches 26°C while coldest month is January, when temperature drops to -23°C. The city is the second sunniest city in Canada, and also second for clearest skies.

Budget Travel to Winnipeg

The Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport is the main gateway to Winnipeg. It gets flights from major cities in Canada, as well as from Northwest Airlines and United Airlines.

You can also take The Canadian train that goes from Vancouver to Toronto to reach Winnipeg, passing also Edmonton and Jasper. Winnipeg is on the Trans-Canada Highway and can also be reached from the United States on the Interstate-29 highway, which continues into Canada as Highway 75.

Budget Travel within Winnipeg

If you limit your sightseeing to the downtown area, then Winnipeg can be covered on foot. Otherwise, the city is quite spread out and you would do well to drive, if you wish to explore it extensively. Public transportation within the downtown area is regarded as "adequate". The main transportation provider in the city is Winnipeg Transit, which operates the buses. The full fare single journey ticket costs C$2.35.

    The mint that produces 4 billion coins annually for circulation in Canada.

  10. St Boniface
    A historic district with the second largest French-speaking community outside of Quebec.

  11. The Forks National Historic Site
    Site with historic buildings that celebrate the city's past, set on a 23-hectare parkland.

  12. Ukrainian Cultural and Educational Centre
    Centre housed in a 1930's heritage building celebrating the history of the second largest ethnic group in Canada.

  13. Winnipeg Art Gallery
    Largest collection of contemporary Inuit art in the world.
