Zaragoza is a city in northeastern Spain. It is the provincial capital of province of Zaragoza and the autonomous community of Aragon. The city covering 1062 sq km (410 sq mi) has a population of about 701,000 (2011 estimate), making it the fifth largest city in Spain.

The city of Zaragoza traces its history to between 25 BC and 12 BC, when a settlement known as Caesaraugusta was founded in the area. In the 5th century, the Goths peacefully replaced the Romans. Then in AD 714 the Berbers took over the city, and renamed it Saraqusta. By the 12th century, the Christian Aragonese were gaining in strength, establishing the Kingdom of Aragon with Zaragoza as capital.

In the 20th century, Zaragoza experienced continuous growth despite a decline in the surrounding rural economy. It hosted Expo 2008, and is preparing to host the Flowers Expo nin 2014. The city has a renowned tradition for folklore and is famous for is cuisine. It has several landmarks which are inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site under Mudéjar Architecture of Aragon.

Going to Zaragoza

By Plane
Zaragoza Airport (ZAZ) is located 16 km to the west of the city center. It is used by both commercial airlines as well as the Spanish Air Force. There are flights connecting it with major cities in Europe. Arriving at the airport, you can take the airport bus to the city center. The journey takes 45 minutes and costs €1.60. There's a bus every 30 minutes on Mondays to Saturdays and every hour on Sundays and holidays.

There are high-speed and regular trains connecting Zaragoza with Madrid and Barcelona. The high speed AVE (Alta Velocidad Expañola) trains cover the distrance with Madrid (from €50) in 1 hour 30 minutes, and with Barcelona (from €60) in 1 hour 45 minutes.
